Why does the union exist?
Unions exist to protect workers from exploitation and ensure safety in the workplace. Unions empower their workers to stand together against injustice, advocate for safe working conditions, and secure equitable wages and benefits. In a system where individual voices can go unheard, the union amplifies collective messages to make our presence stronger. Together, we support one another, build confidence, and create community. Every worker’s voice matters.

What does it mean when the employer says:
“We can’t, because The Union”?
The union doesn’t prevent our employer from paying higher wages, offering merit increases, bonuses, or additional compensation. Those decisions are guided by the employer’s own policies and practices, which often limit increases for everyone—not just union employees. When the employer blames “The Union,” they deflect responsibility.
As a union, we push back against these inferences. When I am your union president, we will track denied requests and bring them to the bargaining table.
In the meantime, we must protect ourselves from burnout. Going “above and beyond” can set unsustainable expectations that the employer may come to treat as the norm. Abiding by healthy boundaries ensures that our efforts are valued and that our work remains sustainable. Together, we’ll advocate for reasonable work expectations with opportunities for growth.

Is it a Gripe or a Grievance?
Our contract, along with state and federal laws, protects us from many exploitative practices. When these protections are violated, our union staff and legal counsel are ready to address formal grievances. However, some issues, which we call “gripes”, may fall outside the scope of laws or and our contract. Although outside of legislation and agreements, these gripes can lead to unreasonable expectations and intolerable working conditions.
I take gripes seriously. Together with stewards, deputy stewards, and fellow members, I’ll help you strategize a resolution. No gripe is too small. I’m here to support you and to prevent small issues from becoming larger problems.
